Why aikido for children
Aikido helps children grow – physically and mentally.
It is not about competition, but about healthy movement, focus and respect.
It helps children to:
- improve coordination, balance and confident movement
- develop calm, concentration and self-control
- build confidence in a natural way
- learn cooperation, respect and consideration for others
- enjoy movement without performance pressure
And above all: children genuinely love aikido 🙂
In class, children learn not only to move better and become more aware of their bodies, but also to function within a group of children of different ages and abilities. They gradually develop cooperation, communication and conflict resolution skills in a safe and supportive environment.
How training works
Classes take place once a week and are led by an experienced instructor with a patient and individual approach to each child. Every session is varied, safe and tailored to the age and abilities of the children. Alongside aikido techniques we also include general movement preparation.
What children experience in training:
- a playful and active warm-up
- simple acrobatics and stretching
- basic movement and falling techniques
- aikido techniques adapted to children's age
- movement games
- foundations of Japanese etiquette (respect, focus)
We place great emphasis on safety, wellbeing and each child's individual pace. Children are not compared with one another – everyone develops at their own pace.
Who is the course for?
- boys and girls aged 10–13 years
- complete beginners are welcome
- no previous sporting experience required
Previous movement experience does not matter – everyone develops at their own pace.
For older children and youth (13–17 years) we are planning a separate youth group on Mondays from September 2026.

Frequently asked questions
How long is one training session?
60 minutes. We kindly ask that children arrive at least 15 minutes before the start so they have time to get changed.
Does my child need any special equipment?
To begin, all you need is the desire to learn something new and comfortable sportswear (t-shirt and trousers below the knee). Training is done barefoot on tatami mats. Indoor shoes are useful for walking between the changing rooms and the gym, and a towel is handy. We later recommend a traditional aikido/judo kimono (gi) – we are happy to advise on choosing one. Suggested shops: Hayashi, Decathlon, and more at this link.
Are there competitions in aikido?
No, aikido is a non-competitive martial art. It is not about rivalry but about finding harmony with your partner. Children can take grading examinations for Aikikai technical ranks.
Is aikido safe?
Yes. Techniques are adapted to the age and abilities of the children, with a strong emphasis on safety and controlled movement.
What happens after the trial lesson?
If your child would like to continue, you register for the semester (3,600 CZK). No commitment in advance – the trial lesson is genuinely non-binding. After submitting your reservation we will contact you with further information.
Is there parking near the gym?
There is a large car park in front of the FTVS building where parking is straightforward.
What can I do while my child is training?
The building houses Sport Centrum Evropská, and directly below our gym there is a sauna.

Aikido for children – what it brings to your child
Aikido is not just a sport. It helps children develop mutual respect, focus, openness and discipline. In a natural and playful way it supports flexibility, coordination and overall motor skills, making children more resilient physically and mentally.
And aikido is fun. It is a non-competitive martial art, so training takes place in a friendly atmosphere free from rivalry and performance pressure. You can read more about aikido on this page.
Aikido creates a safe and friendly environment where children learn naturally through movement and play. They take away new skills, friendships and a positive relationship with movement that can stay with them for life.

Grading examinations
Our club is a member of the Czech Aikido Association (Aikikai of the Czech Republic), which is directly affiliated with the central organisation in Tokyo. Through the CAA it is possible to take kyu grading examinations (student grades) and dan examinations (master grades). The annual CAA membership fee is not included in the course price. Membership gives access to internationally and permanently recognised Aikikai Hombu Dojo grading examinations, as well as certain discounts – for example, a 400 CZK reduction on the summer aikido school. The fee for children under 15 is 300 CZK per year.
